Grand Superintendent Letter 4

Sir Knights & Cousins,

Happy St. Nicholas Day. The fourth century Bishop of Myra, located in what is now modern day Turkey, St. Nicholas, is of course, commemorated as Santa Claus throughout most of the world, and known in Ireland as Daidí na Nollag, or Father Christmas. Globally, festivities celebrating jolly ol’ Saint Nick can range from today through Christmas, and in Ireland, as in most of America, he is most commonly associated with Christmas Eve, when Irish children traditionally leave a mince pie and a glass of Guinness for Santa along with a carrot for Rudolph. Meanwhile, many children on the continent of Europe spent this morning checking their stockings for candy, coins and the occasional orange, traditional gifts on St. Nicholas Day.

Speaking of gifts, I feel that this year as Grand Superindendent has been a wonderful gift. From our successful outings with the United Irish Societies, including the Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade and Detroit Tigers Irish Heritage Night, to our Michigan Knight Masons Statewide Assembly & Trinity Sunday Observance, to the hospitality I received during my visits to our Michigan Councils and the opportunity to deliver a bottle of Mullins Irish Cream to our Excellent Chiefs, this year has been a joy I won’t soon forget, and if so preferred I look forward to another year as your Grand Superintendent.

That brings me to Masonic Week and the 60th Annual Meeting of the Grand Council of the United States of America. If you have never attended Masonic Week, I highly recommend you make a point of visiting at least once during your Masonic career. Masonic Week 2026 is being held from February 4 to February 8 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Washington DC – Crystal City. The deadline for hotel reservations is Monday, January 12th, 2026, and the deadline for meal reservations is Sunday, February 1, 2026, so be sure to get your tickets now at amdusa.org/wp/masonic-week.

Lastly, installation season is upon us, and as in years past Zion Lodge No. 1, F&AM has requested an honor guard for their installation, and we need a few more Knight Masons who can commit to both the practice and the installation. The practice is Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 7pm in the Greek Ionic Room (5C) at Detroit Masonic Temple, and the installation is on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 4pm in Detroit as well. It’s a great honor to be able to do this for Michigan’s oldest Lodge, and if you are interested in participating, please contact Jack Ruby at jackruby586@yahoo.com or (586) 935-7266.

Be sure to check our updated calendar for our 2026 meeting dates, and with that, I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
